In the world of nutrition you here a lot about things that you cannot eat. I wanted to help prioritize those things for you. Below, I will briefly discuss the top for most important toxins to avoid below, please look to my website for more information on each topic. Each of these items are abundant in the standard American diet and all have appeared in the last century. I believe they are a leading cause of many of the health challenges we face today.
The top 4 most important toxins to avoid are:
Trans Fats aka hydrogenated oils
High Fructose Corn Syrup
MSG –Monosodium Glutamate
aspartame aka NutraSweet
sucralose aka Splenda
saccharin aka Sweet n Low
Trans Fats came about because food manufactures didn’t want their food to spoil. They realized that when they made vegetable oils they would spoil quickly from oxidation. The manufactures developed a process to inject hydrogen into these oils to change them from the foods they were into something that would not spoil. An essential principle of health is if it does not spoil, its not a food. Trans fats are being linked to major illnesses, including be a cause of autoimmune disease, as well as heart disease. The F.D.A. has stated that there is no safe level of trans fats in the American diet. A great book on this is Trans Fats: the Hidden Killer in our Food by Judith Shaw
High Fructose Corn Syrup is an extract from corn where the sugar is concentrated. This sugar is perceived by your liver in much the same way as alcohol does. It is a major casue of obesity in our nation. Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology discusses the dangers of this form of sugar in detail on a YouTube video that has had over 800,000 times. You can watch this in depth video via a link on my website.
MSG- Monosodium Glutamate is a toxic food additive which that has been reported to cause headaches, muscle pain, joint stiffness, difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, irregular heartbeat, and depression. This toxin causes swelling of the nerves and increases the glutamate in your brain which creates more irritability. Learn more in the book In Bad Taste, The MSG Syndrome by George Schwartz, M.D.
Artificial Sweeteners are toxic chemicals that are made to taste sweet. These chemicals cause a host of problems. Research studies have shown that consumption of these artificial sugars lead to more obesity. There has been supposition that aspartame has increased Alzheimer’s disease by the neurologist in the book: Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills by Russell L Blaylock, MD
The basic principle to understand is that our body is not made to use these “fake foods” and when we consume significant amounts in our diet we have a host of problems develop. Unfortunately, it is difficult to link these things directly, but the principle still holds true. Eat what nature and God put on the planet .
